The difference between an average cleaner and a good service is rarely the products or the equipment. It is structure: an agreed list, the same standard every visit and a sensible answer when something goes wrong. This post sets out what to expect from a quality cleaning service, at home or at work, so you can tell whether the one you have is meeting it.
In short, a good service will:
- agree in writing what it will clean, and how often
- turn up when it said it would, or tell you in good time if it cannot
- work through the agreed list on every visit, not only the first few
- treat your home or premises with care
- deal with a missed task or a complaint quickly and without argument
- make it easy to change, pause or cancel visits
Before the first clean
Most problems with cleaners start with something that was never agreed. Before the first visit, a good service will talk through:
- the rooms and tasks to cover, and any that are off limits
- how often to come, and roughly how long each visit takes
- who supplies products and equipment
- access: keys, alarm codes, pets and where to park
- how much notice either side needs to change or cancel a visit
It should also tell you what is outside a standard visit, such as inside the oven or interior windows, so there are no surprises. If you are looking at regular domestic cleaning, our post on what happens after you book walks through the first few weeks.
Once the visits start
After that, the test is consistency: the same agreed list and the same standard on the tenth visit as on the first, and a quick, calm response if something is missed or broken. Our post on signs of a reliable home cleaning service lists what to look for once visits are under way, and the warning signs that mean it is time to look elsewhere.
Communication and changes
You should know who to contact and how: a phone number answered during working hours, and a reply to messages within a reasonable time. Holidays and sickness happen on both sides. Ask how the service covers your clean when your usual cleaner is away, and how much notice it needs when you are away.
Offices and business premises
The same standards apply at work, with a few extras: cleaning at times that suit the business, discretion around staff and visitors, and a clear contact for the person who manages the building. Our page on office and commercial cleaning explains how we work with businesses.
