How to keep your home fresh between cleaning visits

Published

A proper clean resets the house, but the days that follow decide how long that feeling lasts. Keeping a home fresh between cleaning visits comes down to a handful of small habits, most taking a few minutes, that stop dust, grease and clutter from getting a head start. Keep them up and each visit goes on real cleaning instead of catching up.

The habits below work whether your cleaner comes every week or every fortnight. If you are still choosing, our regular domestic cleaning page explains what a visit covers, and a separate guide looks at how often to book a cleaner.

Five minutes a day

  • Wash up or load the dishwasher after each meal. Nothing makes a kitchen look neglected faster than a sink stacked with pans.
  • Wipe the worktops and hob when you finish cooking. Fresh splashes come off with a damp cloth; leave them a week and they need scrubbing.
  • Ventilate the bathroom after a shower. Open the window or run the extractor fan, and a quick pass with a squeegee over the glass and tiles keeps water marks and limescale down.
  • Take shoes off at the door. Grit and mud stay on the mat instead of travelling through the hall and onto the carpets.

None of this replaces a clean. It simply stops the surfaces your cleaner has just done from collecting a week of build-up.

A 15-minute reset once a week

Choose a fixed slot, such as Sunday evening or the night the bins go out, and run through a short routine:

  1. Clear surfaces: post, keys, chargers and anything else that has drifted onto tables and worktops goes back where it lives.
  2. Empty every bin in the house, not only the kitchen one.
  3. Put a wash on so the laundry basket never spills over onto the bedroom floor.
  4. Give the toilet and basin a quick wipe.
  5. Vacuum the hallway and the kitchen floor, where most crumbs and outside dirt end up.

Done every week, this keeps the house in a comfortable middle ground until the next visit. For more on the two rooms that take the most wear, see our kitchen cleaning tips and bathroom cleaning tips.

Stopping mess at the source

Most mess either comes in through the front door or piles up where things have no fixed home. A few small changes help a lot:

  • One mat outside the door and another inside catch most of the dirt from shoes.
  • Hooks or a shelf for bags, coats and post stop the hallway turning into a dumping ground.
  • Baskets or boxes for toys mean a living room can be cleared in a couple of minutes.
  • A towel kept by the back door for wiping paws saves the floors after a muddy walk.

Winter, children and pets

Homes slip back fastest in winter. Wet coats, muddy boots and more time spent indoors all bring extra dirt in, so the door mats and the weekly hallway vacuum earn their keep from October onwards. Our guide to planning home cleaning through the year covers the seasonal changes in more depth.

With children, the pressure points are crumbs around the table, fingerprints on doors and glass, and toys spread from room to room. A short tidy-up before bed keeps the floors clear, which also lets the next visit go further.

Pets leave hair on sofas and floors and bring the garden indoors on their paws. Brushing a dog outside when you can, washing pet bedding often and a quick vacuum where they sleep all make a difference. For floors with carpet, our post on keeping carpets clean between professional cleans has more ideas.

Getting ready for the next visit

Your cleaner’s time is best spent cleaning rather than tidying. The evening before, clear the worktops, pick clothes and toys up off the floors and put away anything you would rather was not moved. That way the visit goes on the work that matters: floors, bathrooms, the kitchen and dusting.
