One-off or regular domestic cleaning: which suits your home?

Published

Choosing between one-off or regular domestic cleaning usually comes down to one question: do you need a reset, or ongoing help? A one-off clean brings a home back to a good standard once. Regular visits keep it there. Many households end up using both, and this post explains when each makes sense and how one leads into the other. Both are part of our domestic cleaning service.

What a one-off clean is for

A one-off clean is a single, thorough visit for a home that needs more than a tidy. Typical reasons are:

  • guests are coming, or you are hosting a gathering
  • a busy few months have let things slip
  • the clear-up after a party
  • moving into a new home, or preparing one for sale
  • the end of summer, or a fresh start after the winter

It is a top-to-bottom clean of the main rooms: floors vacuumed and mopped, skirting boards, cobwebs, the outside of kitchen cupboards and appliances, worktops, sink and hob, and a full clean of the bathroom including tiles, shower screen, bath and toilet. Some tasks, such as blinds and inside the oven or fridge, are extras you can add. Windows are not part of a one-off clean.

A one-off clean is not the same as a deep clean. A deep clean goes further, inside cupboards once they are emptied, behind appliances and into every corner, and takes longer. If the home has been left for a long time, or you are about to start a tenancy or finish building work, a deep clean may be the better choice.

What regular cleaning is for

Regular cleaning is upkeep: a cleaner comes every week or every fortnight and works through the same list each time. Because nothing gets the chance to build up, each visit is shorter than a one-off clean and costs less per hour. It suits households that would rather spend evenings and weekends on something other than chores, and homes that are used hard, by families, pets or several people sharing.

Every regular visit has a minimum call-out charge, which you still pay if the visit takes less time. If you are not sure whether weekly or fortnightly is right, read how often to book a cleaner.

Side by side

Aspect One-off clean Regular cleaning
Purpose A reset, once Keeping the home in order
How often When you need it Weekly or fortnightly
Length of visit Longer Shorter, once the home is on track
Hourly rate Higher Lower, and lowest for weekly visits
Suits Guests, events, a busy spell, moving in Busy households, families, shared homes

Start with a one-off, then go regular

If you want regular help but the home is behind, starting regular visits straight away means the first few go on catching up, and it can take weeks to reach a steady standard. A one-off or deep clean first brings everything up to a level that regular visits can then keep. From then on, each visit goes on upkeep rather than catching up.

The same works the other way round. If you have regular visits and want a bigger job done before a special occasion, a one-off clean can be booked on top.
