Questions to ask before booking a cleaner

Published

Five minutes of questions before the first visit saves a lot of awkwardness later. If you are about to book a domestic cleaning in Woking, these are the questions to ask before booking a cleaner, grouped so you can work through them on the phone. Having the answers ready also means a more accurate quote.

Questions about your home

Start with what the cleaner is walking into.

  • Which rooms need cleaning? The whole house, or just the kitchen, bathrooms and living areas?
  • What matters most to you? Many people have one or two priorities, such as the bathroom or the kitchen floor, and it helps to say so.
  • What condition is it in now? A home that has not been cleaned for a while takes longer the first time, and the cleaner should know before they arrive.
  • Are there pets? Say whether they will be at home and whether any rooms should stay closed.
  • Is anything fragile or off limits? Antiques, a home office, a child’s room left as it is: mention them at the start.

Compare your answers with what a domestic clean includes so you know which jobs are part of a normal visit and which are extras. For a fuller picture, see what a regular clean includes room by room.

Questions about the visit

  • How often? Weekly and fortnightly visits suit most homes that want to stay on top of things; a one-off clean suits a reset before guests or after a busy patch.
  • How long will each visit be? Ask how the time is estimated and whether there is a minimum visit.
  • Which days and times are available? Check whether weekends cost more. We clean seven days a week, and weekend appointments cost no extra.
  • Do you need to be at home? If not, agree how the cleaner will get in, where keys are kept and who knows the alarm code.
  • Will the same person come each time? For regular cleans we send the same cleaner wherever possible.

Questions about products and equipment

Some services bring everything, some use what you have, and some charge for products separately. Ask which applies, and whether products are in the price you have been quoted. We bring the products and equipment ourselves.

If anyone at home has allergies, asthma or sensitive skin, or you prefer particular products, say so now rather than on the day. Ask, too, about surfaces that need special care, such as natural stone, wooden floors or a delicate hob.

Questions about changes

Plans change. Before you commit, find out:

  • how much notice you need to give to move a visit
  • what happens if you need to cancel at short notice
  • whether you can pause visits for holidays
  • whether there is a minimum term or contract

Questions about price

  • Is the price hourly or fixed for the job?
  • Is there a minimum charge per visit, and how many hours does it cover?
  • How are extras, such as the inside of the oven or windows, charged?
  • What happens if a job takes longer than expected?

Our rates and the minimum call-out charge are on our prices page, and the reasoning behind a quote is explained in how cleaning quotes are worked out.
