How cleaning needs differ by household

Published

No two homes need quite the same clean. Who lives there, how they use the rooms and who is at home during the day all change where the dirt builds up and what a cleaner should focus on. This guide looks at domestic cleaning for different types of household in Woking and the surrounding areas, and what each might ask for. Every visit of our domestic cleaning can be planned around your schedule, your priority rooms and the tasks you add or remove.

Living alone or as a couple

Smaller households usually make less mess but have less time to deal with it, especially when everyone is out at work all day. A shorter visit, or a fortnightly rather than weekly one, often does the job. The useful thing is to pick priorities: for many people that is the bathroom and the kitchen, with the bedroom and living room vacuumed and dusted. If you work from home, mention the home office, and whether papers on the desk should be left alone.

Sharing a flat or house

In a shared home the shared spaces are the problem: the kitchen, the bathroom, the hallway and the living room, used by everyone and owned by no one. A regular cleaner for those areas can take the arguments out of the rota. Agree between you:

  • which rooms are included, and whether bedrooms are left out
  • who books, who pays and how the cost is split
  • how the cleaner gets in, and who is the contact if something needs saying

Families with young children

Family homes collect crumbs, fingerprints and laundry at a remarkable rate. Floors, the kitchen and bathrooms usually need the most attention, and a weekly visit is common. Our post on cleaning help for busy families covers this in more detail.

Older residents and those who look after them

For an older person living independently, a regular clean takes care of the jobs that get harder over time: changing beds, vacuuming stairs, cleaning the bath. For relatives arranging it, a few things help:

  • Consistency: a familiar face matters. For regular cleans we send the same cleaner wherever possible.
  • Access: agree how the cleaner will get in, especially if the person is not always able to come to the door.
  • Priorities: say which jobs matter most, and anything that should not be moved.
  • A contact: let us know who to call if there is a question during the visit.

A cleaner is not a carer, but a tidy, clean home is easier and safer to live in.

Homes with pets

Pet hair gathers along skirting boards, on stairs and on soft furnishings, and muddy paws mean more floor cleaning in winter. When you book, mention:

  • how many pets you have and where they will be during the clean
  • any nervous animals, or any that might slip out of an open door
  • the floors and furniture that collect the most hair
  • any products you prefer to avoid around animals

Landlords and homes between tenancies

A rented home needs different treatment at different times. During a tenancy, regular cleaning is usually the tenant’s choice. Between tenancies, the property needs a thorough clean before new tenants move in: an end of tenancy clean when the previous tenant leaves, or a deep clean between tenants if it has stood empty or needs extra attention.
