How often should carpets be professionally cleaned? For most homes, every 6 to 12 months is enough. Pets, young children, a busy hallway or a change of tenant all shorten that, and a carpet that is barely walked on can go longer. The table below gives a starting point, and the signs further down tell you when not to wait.
Vacuuming lifts what sits on top of the pile, but grit, dust and spills work down to the base of the fibres, where only a machine that injects and extracts water can reach them. That is what our carpet cleaning service does, with stains treated first and the carpet dried as quickly as possible afterwards.
A guide to how often
| Property | How often | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Most homes | Every 6 to 12 months | Normal family use; dirt builds up slowly in walkways |
| Homes with pets | Every 4 to 6 months | Hair, paw prints and accidents add up faster |
| Rented homes | Between tenancies | Each new tenant should start with clean carpets |
| Offices | Every 3 to 6 months | Entrances, corridors and areas around desks take heavy daily wear |
Treat these as averages. A spare bedroom carpet might go two years; a hallway carpet in a house with three children and a dog may need attention sooner than the table suggests.
Signs a carpet needs cleaning sooner
You do not need to wait for the calendar if you notice:
- stains that come back after you have cleaned them, which usually means residue below the surface
- a smell that returns a day or two after vacuuming, often from pets or spills
- flattened, darker paths along the routes people walk
- colours that look dull or grey compared with the edges of the room
- dust and grit after building work or decorating
- any water damage, which should be dealt with quickly before it starts to smell
Rented homes and the end of a tenancy
Carpets are one of the first things checked when a tenancy ends, because stains and odours are easy to see and hard to hide. If you are moving out, book the carpet clean for after the furniture has gone, so the whole floor can be done and has time to dry before the check-out inspection.
Carpet cleaning is not part of a standard end of tenancy cleaning price, but it can be added to the same booking. For landlords, cleaning carpets between tenancies means each new tenant moves into a fresh home and makes later inspections simpler.
Office and commercial carpets
Office carpets take far more foot traffic than a home, especially at entrances, in corridors and around kitchens and printers. Cleaning them every 3 to 6 months keeps them looking presentable and holds off the day they need replacing. Scheduling the clean for an evening or weekend means the carpet is dry before staff return.
Between professional cleans
The longer you can keep dirt out of the pile, the longer each professional clean lasts:
- vacuum high-traffic areas at least twice a week, and slowly, so the brush can work
- blot spills straight away with a clean cloth instead of rubbing them in
- put mats at outside doors so grit stays at the entrance
