A regular domestic clean covers the essentials: kitchen and bathroom surfaces, dusting, vacuuming and mopping. Some jobs take too long to fit into every visit, or need the room or appliance emptied first, so they are booked as additions. This guide covers the extras you can add to a domestic clean, why they are agreed in advance and how to fit them in without making every visit longer. If you want the baseline first, our post on what a regular clean includes lists it room by room, and a regular domestic clean explains how the service works.
Common extras
| Extra | What it involves | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Inside the oven | Racks, door glass and the inside of the oven degreased | The oven needs to be cool; a heavily used oven may suit a separate oven clean |
| Inside the fridge or freezer | Shelves and drawers out and washed, inside wiped | Empty it first, or tell us what to set aside; a freezer needs defrosting beforehand |
| Inside cupboards | Shelves and doors wiped inside | Cupboards need to be emptied first |
| Cooker hood | The hood cleaned inside and out | Mention if the filters have not been cleaned for a long time |
| Interior windows | Inside glass, frames and sills | Exterior windows are a separate job |
| Blinds | Slats wiped or dusted | Fabric blinds may need specialist cleaning |
| Walls | Marks spot cleaned | Say if the paint is delicate or recently decorated |
| Bed changing and laundry | Fresh bedding put on, laundry washed | Leave clean bedding out |
| Ironing | Ironing done during the visit | Agree how much fits in the time |
Some smaller tasks, such as mirrors, internal window sills, door frames, light fittings and banisters, can usually be added on request without much extra time.
Why extras are agreed first
Most domestic cleaning is charged by the hour, so an extra is extra time. Agreeing it in advance means:
- the visit is booked for long enough, and the regular tasks are not rushed to fit it in
- the cleaner brings the right products, such as an oven degreaser or a descaler
- the fridge, freezer or cupboards are emptied before the cleaner arrives
- you know what the visit will cost before it starts
Asking on the day often works for something small, but for an oven or a full fridge, a little notice makes a big difference.
Rotate extras across visits
You do not need every extra on every visit. Many households rotate them, so each one is done every month or two without making any single visit much longer. For example, with fortnightly visits:
- visit one: inside the fridge
- visit two: interior windows
- visit three: inside the oven
- visit four: blinds and skirting detail
Between visits, a quick wipe of the fridge shelves and the hob keeps the bigger jobs manageable: our kitchen cleaning tips have more ideas.
When a deep clean makes more sense
If you find yourself wanting most of the extras at once, it is usually simpler to book a one-off deep clean. A deep clean covers inside cupboards, appliances, descaling and the places regular visits skip, in a single visit.
Separate services
Some jobs are better as services of their own, with their own equipment. A neglected oven may need oven cleaning, and stained or tired carpets need carpet cleaning, which uses an extraction machine rather than a vacuum.
